A Little About Me
To give you some context, let me share a bit of my journey through education and what brought me here. As a child of a military family, I moved frequently and had the unique opportunity to attend public schools in various parts of the country. Imagine constantly shifting between different educational environments—from schools with top-tier resources to those struggling with limited funding. It was an eye-opening experience that shaped my understanding of the diverse challenges and opportunities within our education system. It gave me a front-row seat to the vast disparities—and the incredible potential—that exist in public education.
Being an only child, I was always a bit of a go-getter when it came to academics. I couldn’t get enough— whether it was reading the dictionary when I was bored (yes I really did this), eagerly raising my hand during class discussions, signing up for spelling bees in elementary school, or getting involved in student council as I grew older. I wasn’t just focused on academics, though. I loved being involved in everything from track and field to dance and drill team. My passion for learning extended beyond the classroom, and I think it’s that early enthusiasm that really set me on the path I’m on today.
When I hit high school, I made a bold choice to attend a School for Creative and Performing Arts for two years. This experience allowed me to embrace my artistic side, and I relished every opportunity to express myself creatively. But I wasn’t done exploring. I soon shifted gears to attend a public vocational school, where I spent my final two years immersed in computer science. This mix of the arts and technology broadened my perspective and reinforced my belief that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to education. Every student deserves the chance to find their unique path, and sometimes that means exploring various educational avenues.
Fast forward a few years, and I became a parent of four wonderfully unique children. My husband and I faced a new challenge, deciding on the best educational options for each of them. We ultimately chose a combination of private and public schools, adjusting to fit each child’s individual needs. We raised kids with varying learning styles, abilities, and interests, from the gifted to the special needs spectrum. This personal journey as a parent navigating different educational systems deepened my appreciation for the complexities of education. It reinforced the idea that every student has a unique set of needs, and our education system must be flexible enough to meet them all.
These experiences both as a student and a parent have driven my passion for public service in education. They’ve given me the insight and determination to help others navigate the often confusing world of school systems. Serving on the Board of Education in various capacities for over a decade, I’ve worked closely with many school districts, learning the intricacies of policy, administration, and classroom dynamics. I’ve had the privilege of seeing firsthand the great work that happens in our schools and also the challenges they face. And I’ve been on a mission to support students, parents, and educators in creating an education system that truly works for everyone.
What is K-12 Public Education?
So, let’s start at the beginning — What exactly is K-12 public education, and why does it matter?
At its core, K-12 public education refers to the system of a free education provided by the government, beginning with kindergarten (and often including pre-kindergarten) and continuing through 12th grade. But that simple definition doesn’t capture the true essence of what public schools do. Public schools are the backbone of our society—they’re the places where young minds are shaped, futures are forged, and communities are built. Every student who walks through those doors deserves the best shot at success, and it’s up to all of us to ensure they get it.
Here’s a breakdown of the key roles that K-12 public schools play in our society:
Providing Academic Instruction: Public schools offer a structured curriculum that covers core subjects like math, science, language arts, and social studies. They also provide elective courses in areas such as art, music, and technology, depending on the school’s resources and grade levels. These schools are responsible for giving students the knowledge they need to thrive in today’s world. But more than that, they foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to analyze and understand complex information.

Fostering Social and Emotional Development: Schools are more than just places for academic learning—they’re also environments where students develop crucial social and emotional skills. Through interactions with peers, teachers, and staff, students learn how to navigate relationships, resolve conflicts, and build emotional resilience. Many schools also offer programs that support mental health, helping students to manage stress, anxiety, and other challenges they might face.

Preparing Students for Future Success: Public schools have a vital role in preparing students for life beyond the classroom. Whether students are heading to college, vocational training, military service, or straight into the workforce, schools help equip them with the skills they’ll need to succeed. This includes everything from communication and collaboration to critical thinking and adaptability—skills that are essential in today’s rapidly changing world.

Ensuring Equal Access to Education: One of the most important functions of public schools is providing equal access to education for all students, regardless of their background, income, or ability. Public schools are designed to serve every child, offering special education services, English language support, and a range of other resources to make sure that each student has the opportunity to succeed.

Promoting Citizenship and Community Engagement: Public schools don’t just teach academics—they also teach the values of citizenship and community. Students learn about civic responsibility, ethical behavior, and the importance of being an engaged member of society. Schools provide knowledge about government, history, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens, helping to create informed, thoughtful individuals who are prepared to contribute to their communities.

Providing a Safe and Supportive Learning Environment: Last but certainly not least, public schools work hard to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all students. Schools have policies in place to address bullying, discipline, and health and safety concerns. They create a secure atmosphere where students can focus on learning without fear or distraction.

How Are Public Schools Governed and Funded?
Public K-12 schools are typically governed by local school boards and funded through a combination of federal, state, and local tax revenues. Each district has the autonomy to make decisions regarding curriculum, budgeting, and policies that reflect the needs of their communities. However, they must also comply with federal and state laws designed to ensure equal access and educational quality. Their goal is simple but powerful: to provide a well-rounded education that helps every student reach their full potential.

Looking Ahead
In the coming posts, we’ll explore how this all happens on the ground—how schools fulfill these critical roles and how we, as a community, can work together to improve the system. I’ll be sharing my insights, my experiences, and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. But I’m also excited to hear from you—your experiences, your questions, and your ideas. Together, we can help make our education system one that truly works for all students, preparing them not just for academic success, but for life success.
So, stick around as we uncover what makes public education tick, how it shapes our communities, and most importantly, how we can all play a part in improving it!! There’s so much to explore, and I can’t wait to get started on this journey with you.
